When I first met my husband (many moons ago), I could barely understand his Australian accent. He teased me that I AM the one with the accent! I was determined to try and understand his kind of English since I wasn’t familiar with many of the words.
To impress him, I purchased an Australian dictionary to write him a letter. When he received it, he called and laughed heartily and told me to be sure not to use certain words because they had a different meaning. Oh my! I had used so many wrong words in my letter to him. But he fell in love with me and we have enjoyed over 25 years of marriage (big smile!).
We decided to create a children’s book together using some of these Australian words called Strine. Since he is a cartoonist/caricature artist, he cartooned our book. Check out his website www.tezatoons.com
I was able to read our book in several first, second, third, and fourth grade classrooms. The children loved it! May you enjoy it too and try speaking Australian. Perhaps you may even get to visit the “Land Down Under” someday. It’s a beautiful country!
